Okay, strictly speaking this wasn't a fourth Fantastic Four cartoon, but as it was a fourth incarnation of the group in animation then it's worth its own page. Spider-Man: The Animated Series was an extremely successful cartoon for Marvel that ran from 19/11/1994 - 31/1/1998. Towards the end of its run from November 1997, the Secret Wars saga was told in Spider-Man: Secret Wars: Chapters 1-3; Arrival; The Gauntlet of the Red Skull; Doom). The three episodes lasted around twenty minutes each and were all written by different creative teams: John Semper and Karen Milovich/Virginia Roth/John Semper, Mark Hoffmeier and Ernie Altbacker. They allowed Quinton Flynn to reprise his 95/96 FF Cartoon role as The Torch, while Reed, Sue and Ben were played by newcomers Cam Clarke, Gail Matthius and Pat Pinney respectively.

Ironically, the best episode of the three was the middle one, the only one not to feature the FF. That's not due to their realisation, which was decent enough (even though the Thing was a bizarre half human hybrid with some curious pebble rattling noises whenever he walked), but just because the writing wasn't as corny. Yes, Spider-Man was a well-made cartoon for the time, albeit with somewhat basic renditions of Ben and Captain America, yet it seriously lacked a sense of humour. As a result, the cartoon, at least here, was often so pompous and over-earnest that it made the somewhat ludicrous Secret Wars saga seem even more outrageous, almost parody-like. The saga was definitely worth a look for completists, but for those who prefer their cartoons with a little more fun and vibrancy, then the best of the FF cartoons are a much more worthy option.
